Introduction:

In this tourism article, I want to describe Ten beautiful festivals of Jammu & Kashmir” that, showcase the unique cultural essence of the state of Jammu & Kashmir.

Jammu & Kashmir, the crown jewel of India. It is not only renowned for its breathtaking landscape but also its vibrant cultural tapestry. The festivals celebrated here reflect the region’s rich heritage and diverse traditions.

Here are ten beautiful festivals that showcase the unique cultural essence of Jammu & Kashmir.

The State of Jammu & Kashmir has magnificent cultures and traditions. The three provinces of the Indian state are Kashmir, Jammu & Ladakh. All festivals are fascinating and diverse in their provenance. 

Jammu & Kashmir was a state in India from 1954 till 2019, constituting the southern and southeastern portion of the larger Kashmir region, disputed between India, Pakistan & China, since the Mid-20th century. 

The Govt. India replaced the special status accorded to Jammu and Kashmir under Article 370 of the Indian Constitution 2019. The parliament of India passed the Jammu & Kashmir Reorganisation Act, With effect from 31st October 2019.

Its area is 222,236 sq km. The languages of Jammu & Kashmir are Kashmiri, Dogri, Urdu, Hindi & English. Its population is about 5 million. More than 80% population is engaged in agriculture of rice, wheat, apples, pears, peaches, and other fruits.

1. The Golden Namchot Festival:- 

Jammu & Kashmir remains vibrant with colourful festivals throughout the year. Ladakh in Jammu & Kashmir is mainly famous for its monastic festivals. These monastic festivals are mostly dance dramas performed by monks who dress up colourfully in robes and masks and perform the various aspects of religion festively. This is one of the famous festivals of Jammu & Kashmir.

 The Golden Namchot festival in Ladakh is celebrated to commemorate the birthday of the Buddha hood of the Tibetan saint scholar, Je Tsongkhapa. He was born in 1357 in Tsongkha city in Amdo, Tibet, which is present-day Haidong and Xining, Qinghai. He was the founder of Gelukpa School during the 14th century which preaches Tibetan Buddhism. 

GOLDEN NAMCHAT FESTIVAL OF JAMMU & KASHMIR

The Golden Namchot festival has both social and religious importance. It is celebrated on the twenty-fifth day of the 10th month of the Tibetan lunar calendar. During the Golden Namchot festival all the monasteries, the public and residential, buildings are well-illuminated with butter lamps. This festival means the starting of New Year celebrations in Ladakh.

 During this festival, all kinds of traditional dishes are prepared like vegetables and chicken noodle soup, momos, and thukpas. Ladakh in Jammu & Kashmir is mainly famous for the monastic festivals. 

Dance and music drama are performed by the monks who dress up colourfully in robes and masks. People visit their loved ones and eat meals together. The Golden Namchot festival is celebrated with great fervour throughout the Ladakh.

 2. Hemis Festival:- 

People from all over the world come to Ladakh’s famous culture and adventures and Buddhist culture. This region is popular for the fairs and festivals. One of the well-known festivals is Ladakh’s Hemis festival.

 This is a day festival denoting Buddhist guru Padmasambhava’s birth anniversary. This festival takes place in the popular Hemis Gompha, which is situated at a distance of 45 km from Leh. This is one of the famous festivals of Jammu & Kashmir.

HEMIS FESTIVAL OF JAMMU & KASHMIR

This two-day Hemis festival celebrates the victory of good over evil. The number of people dressed in bright colourful clothes to celebrate the festival. To protect his people the Tibetan Buddhism founder Guru, Padmasambhava fought the evils. 

On his birth anniversary, all the people celebrate the Hemis festival. On this particular day, a ritual is followed. People at this festival mask themselves and sing and dance. The main highlight of this festival is the unique masked dance performed by the Lamas. 

The dance performance depicted this festival’s central theme of victory of good over evil. One of Ladakh’s oldest carnivals is the Hemis festival. This festival is organised in the monastery, which is 300 years old and also Ladakh’s richest monastery. All the activities during the Hemis festival take place at the Hemis Gompha in the centre.

3. Tulip Festival:- 

The Tulip Festival is an annual celebration, that aims to showcase. It is organised during the onset of spring in Kashmir Valley. This Tulip festival has a wide range of flowers in the Tulip Garden. This festival is organised by the Government of Jammu & Kashmir to increase tourism. 

The Tulip Garden has sixty types of tulips that are planted in such a way that they form beautiful views to attract thousands of tourists from both national and International every year in spring. The main dates of the Tulip Festival are from the 1st of April to the 30th of April every year.

 The Indira Gandhi Memorial of Tulip Garden can be accessible by road, rail and air route. There are several species of Tulip flowers such as standard Tulips, Double Bloom, Parrot Tulips, Fringed Tulips,–colour standard Tulips, Fostering Tulips, Lily flowering Tulips and many more types. This is one of the famous festivals of Jammu & Kashmir.

 The Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden in Srinagar is spread over 30 hectares of Land. This Tulip garden is Asia’s biggest Tulip garden. 

4. Ladakh Festivals:-

 This is the main festival of Jammu & Kashmir’s Ladakh region. The Ladakh festival is a unique convergence of culture and enthusiasm. It is the harvest festival of Jammu & Kashmir. This festival is held for 15 days in September every year.

 

 The major streets of Leh and Ladakh are decorated with lights and people are dressed as colourful cultural troops from the various parts of Ladakh. They walk on the street with various parts of traditional music and dance. Archery and polo competitions are also held during this festival and are wonderful treats for visitors. This is one of the famous festivals of Jammu & Kashmir.

5. Dosmoche Festival in Ladakh:- 

The Dosmoche festival is celebrated every year in February with great enthusiasm in Leh, Likir, and Diskit monasteries. It is a two-day annual festival where the Lamas from Takthok Monastery who are experts in astrology and tantric practices prepare the complex thread the capture the evil spirits.

 The Dosmoche Festival is celebrated in Ladakh, just below the Leh place. It is also known as the “Festival of Scapegoats”. It is one of the most famous prayer festivals in Ladakh. During this festival, monks from different monasteries gather at the country yard of the Leh place to perform the masked dances called Chhamas.

 It signifies the victory of good over evil. People share sweets with friends and families. It is a festival of colour, celebration and joy. The festival commences with the setting up of large wooden masts decorated with sacred emblems, streamers & flags. 

The Lamas continue to weave the crosses while chanting the sacred mantras, a practice known as Chams. This ritual symbolises the elimination of all evil spirits. Every ritual is performed according to a particular time.

6. Shikara Festival:- 

The lifeline and identity of the Dal Lake in Kashmir, Shikara celebrated once a year. To promote tourism, Kashmir’s government began this festival in 2016. During this festival, shakers are painted and dressed beautifully. Shikas participate in the Shikara race and, the Dragon Boat race. This is one of the famous festivals of Jammu & Kashmir.

SHIKARA FESTIVAL OF JAMMU & KASHMIR

Another cultural programme has also been organised which will give you a glimpse of the culture of Kashmir. This festival takes place in July or August every year. The shikhara is a type of wooden boat found on Dal Lake and the water bodies of Srinagar & Jammu Kashmir.

Shikras are of varied sizes and are used for multiple purposes including transporting the people. Some of the shikara are used for Fishing, harvesting, aquatic vegetation (usually for fodder) and transport.

7. Gurez Festival:- 

Around 123 km. From Kashmir, Gurez is the placid valley in the Himalayas at an elevated height of about 8000 feet. Neelum River flows amidst the Gurez Valley and is a perfect destination for river rafting activity.

GURAZ FESTIVAL OF JAMMU & KASHMIR

 People of People of Gurez play host to the annual festival in which they showcase their handicrafts, cuisines, and culture. Everyone assembles for the fest which also involves fun activities like river rafting, trekking, zorbing, cycling, etc.

 Many completions such as painting and drawing also take place which witness huge participation. Many musical programmes displaying Kashmiri culture are also a pleasure to attend. The Gurez festival is celebrated at the time of July or August month every year.

 8. Sindhu Darshan Festival:- 

This is a three-day festival which is celebrated every year from 12th June to 14th June on the banks of the Indus River. Every year a huge number of participants join in this festival, bringing water from their states in earthenware pots and immersing these into the Sindhu River. 

SINDHU DARSHAN FESTIVAL OF JAMMU KASHMIR

As a way of promoting unity in the country. The key reason for this festival is to promote the harmony and unity of India. Oodles of people come from various parts of the country to participate in this event. 

They fetch water from their state in earthenware pots and immerse them in the Sindhu River. This festival catches the eyes of a lot of tourists, both domestic and foreign. This festival started in the year of 1997.

9. NAVROZ FESTIVAL :-

Navroz, the Persian Year, is celebrated with great enthusiasm by the Parsi Community in Jammu & Kashmir. It signifies the arrival of spring and is marked by special prayers, feasts, and cultural events. The festival reflects the region's multicultural fabric and promotes unity and harmony among the people. This is one of the famous festivals of Jammu & Kashmir.

10. Eid-ul -Fitar Festival:-

EID UL FITAR AT JAMMU &KASHMIR

Eid-ul-Fitar, marking the end of Ramadan is celebrated with immense joy and Fervor in Jammu & Kashmir. The festival begins with special prayers at the mosque followed by feasts family gatherings and the exchange of gifts. This is one of the famous festivals of Jammu & Kashmir. Traditional dishes like  Kebabas, biryani and sheer khurma are prepared, making it a delightful culinary experience.

The best way of reaching Jammu & Kashmir by air, rail and road is described below in detail.

By Air:- Srinagar airport, now famously known as Sheiks UI Alam International Airport Srinagar, operates flights to the major cities of India like Goa, Delhi, Leh, Mumbai, Bangalore and Jammu.

Some of the flights operated by this airport are Indigo, Air India, Go Air and Jet Airways.

Srinagar airport is located at a distance of 14 km from the city centre Jammu also has its airport which is located just 8 kilometres southwest of the city of Jammu. All major airlines in India operate daily flights to & fro from Jammu city.

By Train:-

At present, there is no railway station in Srinagar. The nearest railway station to Srinagar is Jammu Tawi Railway Station, which is located almost 300 kilometres away from Srinagar.

Jammu Tawi Railway Station operates several daily trains to Delhi like New Delhi Jammu Tawi Rajdhani Express, Jammu Mail and Jammu Tawi Express.

By Road:

Jammu & Kashmir enjoys good road connectivity and can be reached by road. The National Highway(NH) 1 & NH 44 connects Kashmir to major cities of India. The Jawahar Tunnel, which connects Jammu to the valley of Kashmir, also lies on this route.

Buses operated by the J&K State Road Transport ( JKSRTC) also connect Jammu to other nearby cities like Patnitop(110 km), Srinagar(264) km. and Amritsar(214) km.
