Introduction

The 15th FIH Hockey World Cup-2023, organized by the International Hockey Federation. It will be held at Kalinga Stadium, Bhubaneswar, and Birsa Munda International Hockey stadium in Rourkela, in the state of Odisha from 13th January 2023 to 29th Jan2023.

 

This is the 2nd time in a row of Hockey World Cup 2023 will take place in India, with the cities of Bhubaneswar and Rourkela hosting all the matches.

About Men’s FIH Hockey World Cup

The men’s FIH Hockey World Cup is an International field hockey competition organized by the International Hockey Federation(FIH). The tournament first started in the year 1971.

 

It is held every 4 years. Pakistan is the most successful team having won the tournament over four years. The Netherlands and Australia won 3 times and German won two times whereas India won once.

 

In 1971 the world cup included only ten nations, which is the smallest world cup. In 2018 this cup featured 16 nations.

2023 FIH Men’s world cup consists of 16 nations with 4 Groups 

Pool-A: Australia, Argentina, France, & South Africa.

 

Pool-B: Belgium, Germany, South Korea & Japan

 

Pool-C: Netherlands, Newland, Malaysia & Chili

 

Pool-D:-India, England, Spain & Wales.

 

The first time    Hockey World Cup was conceived by Pakistan’s Air Marshal Nur Khan. Mr. Khan proposed the idea to the FIH through Patrick Rowley, the first editor of world Hockey magazine.

 

Their idea was approved on 26th October 1969 and adopted by the FIH Council at a meeting in Brussels on 12th April 1970.

 

History of Hockey:-

 

The historical record shows that crude from the game was played in Egypt 4000 years ago and Ethiopia around 1000 B.C, whilst an ancient form of the game was also played in Iran in around 2000 B.C.

 

The first Hockey Association was formed in the UK in 1876 and drew up the first format set of rules. In 1886 it was revived by nine founding members club.

 

The first inaugural Olympic Hockey competition for men was held in London in 1908 with England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales competing separately. Again country of Germany and France, the join competition 

ran with six teams.

 

Motivated by hockey’s omission from the 1924 Paris Games, the Federation International de Hockey Sur Gazon(FIH) was founded by 

paul Leautey. M. Lyautey, who would later became the first president of the FIH called together seven National Federation to form the sports 

International governing body.

 

In 1927, the International Federation of Women’s Hockey Association (IFWHA) was formed. By 1964 there were already 50 countries affiliated 

with the FIH as well as three continental Associations of Africa, Pan America, and Asia.

 

In 1974 there were 71 members. Today the International Hockey federation consists of five Continental Associations and 137 National Associations. India won the 1st men’s world cup Hockey in the year 1975. Whereas Pakistan won 4 times 1971, 1978,1982&1994.

 

How Hockey is Popular in India:-

Hockey is a popular sport in India, with a rich history and a strong tradition of success at the International level. Indian national hockey has won eight Olympic gold medals, the most by any team in the world. It is considered one of the strongest teams in sports.

 

The game of hockey is said to have been introduced to India by the British during the colonial era. The first hockey club in India called the Calcutta cricket and Hockey club was established in 1885The first national hockey tournament the Beighton Cup was held in 1895.

 

In the early years of Indian hockey, the game was dominated by British soldiers and Indian Army teams. However, as the sports began to spread to the general population.

 

The Indian national hockey team first completed in the Olympics in 1928, and went on to win its first gold medal at the 1932 Games in Los Angeles. The team continued its success throughout the 1930 and 1940 gold medals at the 1936,1948 and 1952 Olympics.

 

Despite these challenges, however, hockey remains a popular and beloved sport in India with strong grassroots development. The local league the Hockey India League is gaining popularity and has attracted many international players and helped to boost the level of Indian Hockey.

 

With the right support and investment, the sport has the potential to once again become a dominant force in the world of hockey.

1. Dhyan Chand: 

 

Dhyan Chand was an Indian field hockey player considered one of the greatest players in the history of sports. He was born in 1905 in Allahabad, British India, and played hockey at a young age.

 

Dhyan represented India’s three Olympic games and won the gold medal in 1928,1932 and 1936. He scored 400 goals in his international career. He was given the nickname “The Wizard” for his magical stick work on the field.

 

.After retiring from Hockey Dhyan chand served as a coach and helped the next generation of Indian hockey players. He passed away in 1979. His birthday on August 29 is National Sports Day in India.

2. PR Sreejesh:

P.R.Sreejesh is an Indian field hockey player who is known for his skill as a goalkeeper. He was born on May 8, 1986, in Kerala, India. Sreejesh began his international career in 2006.

 

He has represented India in several major tournaments, including Olympic Games the world cup, and the Asian games. He has been a key player in the Indian national team. He has excellent shoot stopping 

abilities and effective captaincy.

 

Sreejesh has been honored with several awards for his achievements in hockey, including the prestigious Arjuna Award in 2015 and Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian award in 2017. He has also been referred to as the ‘ Wall of Indian Hockey’ for his outstanding performance as a goalkeeper.

3. Rupinder Pal Singh:

Rupinder Pal Singh is an Indian field hockey player who plays as a defender. He was born on December 13, 1990, in Faridkot, Punjab, India. Rupinder Pal Singh started his career in hockey as a drag-flicker and he is known for his powerful shots on goal and his ability to score from penalty corners.

 

Rupinder Pal Singh represented India in several international tournaments including Olympic Games, the World Cup, and the Asian Games. He was a member of the Indian team that won the silver medal at the 2010 commonwealth Games and the bronze medal at the 2014 Asian Games.

 

He also played an important role in the Indian team that finished as runner-up in the 2014 Hockey World Cup and the 2018 Asian Games.

Rupinder Pal Singh has been honored with several awards for his achievements in hockey, including the Arjuna Awards in 2017. He is currently serving as Vice Captain of the Indian Hockey team.

4.Harmanpreet Singh:

Harmanpreet Singh is an Indian field Hockey player who plays as a defender. He was born on May 8, 1996, in Kultan Punjab, India. Harmanpreet Singh began playing hockey at a young age and made his international debut for India in 2016. He has since become a key player in the Indian national team and is known for his strong defensive skills, quick reflexes, and powerful drag flicks.

 

Harmanpreet Singh represented India in several major tournaments including Olympic Games, the World Cup, and the Asian Games. He was Indian team that finished as runners ups in the 2018 Asian Games and also a member of the India team that won the Asian Championships Trophy in 2016 and 2017.

 

Harmanpreet Singh was also honored with the prestigious Arjuna awards in 2020, one of India’s highest sporting honors for his outstanding performance in the field of hockey. Now he is the Indian Hockey team captain in world hockey cup-2023.

5.Gurjant Singh:

Gurjant Singh is a forward player for  Indian field hockey player. He was born on October 6, 1994, in Kular Village, Punjab in India. Gurjant Singh began his hockey career as a member of the Indian junior team and quickly moved up to the senior team.

He made his senior debut in 2016. He has known for his speed and agility as well as his ability to score goals. Gurjant Singh has represented India in several major tournaments, including the Hockey World League, and  Asian Champions Trophy, & the Asian Games.

He also played a key role in the Indian team that finished as runners ups in the 2018 Asian Championship Trophy and 2019 FIH Series Finals.

International Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium at Rourkela, Odisha:-

The Birsa Munda International Hockey stadium is a field hockey stadium located at Rourkela in the state of Odisha, India. The stadium is named after the tribal leader Birsa Munda, who was active in the region in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

 

It is a newly constructed stadium inaugurated in the year 2022. The stadium is built to host International level hockey matches and has a seating capacity of around 21000 spectators with all necessary amenities as per international standards.

 

This stadium is the largest all-seater field hockey stadium in the world. It also has facilities like a hostel, gym and recovery room, etc.This stadium is considered one of the best field hockey facilities in India and is expected to host several International and national level hockey events in the future.

Conclusion:- The  Men’s  Hockey World Cup 2023 opening ceremony was held on 11-1-2023 at Cuttack, Odisha. Bollywood stars Ranveer Singh and Disha Patni, internationally acclaimed  K-Pop band  BLACK SWAN, featuring  Odisha’s very own  Shreya Lenka are some of the stars to perform in the 40,000-packed capacity stadium.

Bollywood music composer  Pritam who composed  Hockey Hai Dil Mera, the official Hockey World Cup anthem, also perform in this ceremony.

 

The  FIH  Hockey  World Cup opening ceremony starts at the  Barabati stadium on Wednesday at 6 PM. After the opening ceremony, the action will move to Bhubaneswar and Rourkela the two cities that will host the FIH Hockey World Cup matches will start on Fri day 13th January 2023.
