India celebrates Happy 74th Republic Day on 26th January 2023, annually, to mark the day as National Day, India became a sovereign republic. In 2023 India will be celebrating its 74th  Republic Day and for the second time in a row, no chief guest will be gracing the event due to a spike in COVID-19cases.

Republic day is the National day in India. The Governing principle “ of the Indian  Constitution is “of the people for the people and By the people “which signifies that the power is vested in the hands of the citizen of India. Republic Day marks the celebration of the empowerment of the Indian Citizen.

Republic Day marks the adoption of India’s constitution and the country’s transaction to a republic on January 26, 1950. Every year, this celebration marking as the National Day of India. It is also marked as spectacular military and cultural pageantry.

The celebrations, inaugurated with a grand parade, are held in the Capital, New Delhi from Raisina Hill near Rashtrapati Bhavan( President’s House) along the Kartavaya path, past India Gate, and onto the historic Red Fort. On this day, ceremonious parades take place at the Kartavya path, which are performed as a tribute to India.

Significance of Republic Day in India:-

The constitution of India is a huge document which lays down procedures , powers , duties, fundamental rights and derective principles of Government of India & Indian citizens.

The governing principle of the Indian constitution is “of the people , for the people and by the people “ which signifies that the power is vested in the hands of the citizens of India.

 Republic Day marks the celebrations of the empowerment of the Indian citizens to select their own government.

 It is a National Holiday which commemorates the process of establishment of the Indian Constitutions. A” Republic” is a form of Government in which “ Supreme power is held by the people and their elected representatives”.

In “Republic” a country is considered a” public matter” not the private concern or the property of the rulers.

 As of 2017,159 of the world’s 206sovereign states use the word “republic” as part of their official name. The word “republic” comes from the Latin term” res publica”, which means “ public thing”,” public matter”.

 Indian constitution was adopted by the Indian Constituent Assembly on 26th November 1949and came into effect on 26th January 1950 with a democratic Government system.

26th January is the date on which Republic Day, it was on this day in 1929when the declaration of Indian Independence (PURNA SWARAJ) was proclaimed by the Indian National Congress.

The Constitution of India:-

“We the people of India ,having solemnly to constitute  india into  a SOVERIEGN, SOCIALIST, SECULAR  DEMOCRATIC  REPUBLIC and to secure  to all the Citizens –Justice , social  economic and Political.

History of Republic Day:-

India achieved independence from the British Raj on 15th August 1947. The Independence came through the Indian Independence Act of 1947.

 

This is an Act of parliament of the United Kingdom. British India was partitioned into the two new independent Dominions of the British Commonwealth.

 

 India obtained its independence on 15th August 1947 as a constitutional monarchy with George VI as head of the state and Earl Mountbatten as the Governor-General.

 

 The country did not have its permanent constitution, instead, the laws were based on the modified colonial Government of India Act, 1935.

 

On 29th August 1947, a resolution was moved for the Appointment of the Drafting Committee, which was appointed to draft a permanent constitution.

Dr B.R. Ambedkar was elected as chairman of the to draft the constitution on 4th November 1947. A draft constitution was prepared by the committee and submitted to the constituent Assembly on 4th November 1947.

 

After many deliberations and some modifications, the 308 members of the Assembly signed two handwritten copies of the document (one each in Hindi and another in English) on 24th January 1950.

 

 Two days later on 26th January 1950, it came into effect throughout the whole nation became the Parliament of India.

 

On the Eve of Republic Day, the President address the nation. On that day Dr Rajendra Prasad began the first term of office as President of the Indian Union.

 Dr B.R. Ambedkar is known as “ Father of Constitutions”.The Constitution of India is the supreme Law of India .A constitution is a set of rules and regulations guiding the adminsteration of a country. It is also longest constitution in the world with 395 Article arranged under 22 Parts and 8 schedules.

Some of the Interesting Facts about Dr. B.R Ambedkar:-

(1) BR Ambedkar is the architect of the Indian Constitutions.

 

(2) He was asocial reformer and Dalit icion who spoke out against inequalities
,discrimination faced by the members of the community.

 

(3) He was first union minister of Law and Justice in the Nehru Government .

 

(4) BR Ambedkar father served in the Indian Army and his ancestors had worked with
East India Company.

 

(5) Ambedkar strongly spoke out against for justifying caste discrimination and
untouchability.

 

(6) Heresigned as the Union Law Minister when his Hindu code Bill faiuled to pass in
Parliament.

 

(7) BRAmbedkar was the man behind the setting up of the Finance commission of India.

 

 (8) On March31,1990 he was posthumouslyconferred with India’s highest civilan award.The Bharat Ratna award.

 

(9) Heconverted Buddhisim in 1956 with his wife.

 

(10)BRAmbedkar personal Library at “ Rajgirh” had more then 50000 books and it wassaid that world’s largest private Library. R

Republic Day Celebrations:-

The main Republic day celebrations are held in the National capital, New Delhi at the Rajpath before the President of India.

 

 On this day, ceremonious parades take place at the Rajpath, which are performed as a tribute to India, its unity in diversity and the rich cultural heritage of India.

 

The Delhi Republic parade is held in the Capital of New Delhi and it is organized by the Ministery of Defence commencing from the gates of the Rashtrapati Bhawana to Raisina Hill on Rajpath.

 

India’s Republic day celebrations last for three days. The parade showcase India’s defence capabilities, cultural and Social Heritage.

The President of India who is the commander in chief of the Indian Armed Forces, take the salute.

 

 Twelve contingents of various paramilitary forces of India and police forces also take part in this parade.

Award Distributions:-

 

On the Eve of Republic Day, the President of India distribute” PADMA AWARDS” to the civilians of India every year.

 

These awards are given in three categories.

 

 (1) Padma Vibhushan

 

(2)Padma Bhushan

 

(3)Padma Shree.

 

(1)PadmaVibhushan:-For “exceptional and distinguished services”.Padma Bhushan is the 2nd highest civilian award in India.

 

(2)Padma Bhushan:-For “distinguished services “ of a high order. Padma Bhushan is the third-highest civilian award in India.

 

(3) Padma Shree:-For “ distinguished services”.Padma Shree is the fourth highest civilian award in India.

 

The Gallantry Awards:-

 

India’s military personnel are honoured with a total of six awards for their show of gallantry and valiance. The Param Vir Chakra, given for displaying acts of valour during wartime, is India’s highest military decoration.

 

Ashok Chakra, Mahavir Chakra, Kirti Chakra, Vir Chakra, Shaurya Chakra are the other awards listed in descending order to their honour.

 

The Presiden’s Police Medal:-

 

The President awards three medals –one for the meritious service, followed by distinguished service and another for gallantry –to law enforcement personnel in the country.

 

The police medal was originally called the President’s Police and Fire Medal.

 

 Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar:-

 

Since 1996, every Prime Minister of the country has felicitated children between the age of 5-18 for exceptional achievements across various fields on Republic Day.

 

Along with a medal, they also receive a certificate, citation and a cash prize of Rs1 Lakhs.

Beating Retreat:-

The Beating Retreat is held after officially denoting the end of Republic Day festivals. It is conducted on the evening of 29th January, the third day after Republic day.

 

It is performed by the bands of the three wings of the military, the Indian Army, the Indian Navy, and the Indian Air Force.

 

The venue is Raisina Hill and the adjacent square, Vijaya chowk., is flanked by the North and South block of the Rashtrapati Bhavan towards the end of Rajpath.

 

The Chief Guest of the function is the President of India who arrives escorted by the President’s Bodyguard (PBG).

 

When President arrives the PBG commander asks the unit to give the National Salute, which is followed by the National Anthem Jana Gana Mana by the Army.
